Credit crunch eating surveyThe credit crunch is turning Brits into a nation of culinary geniuses - because they can no longer afford to eat out.
A study found three quarters of us now regularly enjoy the 'restaurant experience' in the comfort of our own home rather than go out for expensive meals. And a similar number believe they have 'upped their game' in the cooking stakes over the last 12 months while trying to save money by staying in.Before the global financial crisis the average Brit treated themselves to three meals out every month. Now more than two thirds visit a restaurant just once a month.
But the poll of 3,000 Brits also found that before they started watching their pennies, the average Brit cooked a nice meal from scratch just twice a month.
But now, that has increased to five times a month or at least once a week.
And although 31 per cent of people consider themselves to be an able cook, 18 per cent say they usually just stick with the basics. Lack of confidence proved a big factor when attempting new styles of exotic cooking with more than 20 per cent of Brits saying they wished they had more self-believe to experiment in the kitchen.
A spokesman for Thai Kitchen, a new range of authenticThai food added: ''Trying new Thai ingredients and cooking more exciting dishes is a great way to compensate for not going out - not only does it give you an enjoyable Thai inspired evening but you can learn new skills in the process.
The whole range comes straight from Thailand and includes products such as Pad Thai sauce, sweet chilli sauce, curry pastes, Jasmine rice and last but certainly not least curry kits which contain rice, curry paste and coconut milk and feed two people for just £2.99 - Credit crunch cuisine!
